The archipelago is named after Robinson Crusoe, but perhaps it should have been called Treasure Island.

A long quest for booty from the Spanish colonial era appears to be culminating in Chile with the announcement by a group of adventurers that they have found an estimated 600 barrels of gold coins and Incan jewels on the remote Pacific island.

“The biggest treasure in history has been located,” said Fernando Uribe-Etxeverria, a lawyer for Wagner, the Chilean company leading the search. Mr Uribe-Etxeverria estimated the value of the buried treasure at US$10bn (£5.6bn).

The announcement set off ownership claims. The treasure hunters claimed half the loot was theirs and said they would donate it to non-profit-making organisations. The government said that they had no share to donate.

It also prompted speculation about the contents of what is considered to be one of the great lost treasures from the Spanish looting of South America. Chilean newspapers were filled with reports that the stash includes 10 papal rings and original gold statues from the Incan empire.

The hoard is supposedly buried 15 metres (50ft) deep on Robinson Crusoe island, also known as the Juan Fernández island, home to Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk, the adventurer immortalised by Daniel Defoe as Robinson Crusoe. Selkirk was dumped on the island and lived alone for four years before being rescued. His exploits brought worldwide attention to the islands.

For centuries treasure hunters have scoured the island in search of booty which was reportedly buried there in 1715 by Spanish sailor Juan Esteban Ubilla y Echeverria. Using everything from old Spanish ship manifests to teams of islanders with shovels and picks, foreigners have made so many claims of discovering the lost treasure that islanders are usually sceptical of the proclamations.

This most recent announcement, however, deserves greater credence because of the equipment used by the treasure hunters: a mini robot that can scan 50 metres deep into the earth. The robot, dubbed “Arturito”, was invented by Chileans and over the past year has grabbed headlines by breaking some of the country’s biggest criminal mysteries.

First, the robot detected the buried arsenal of a rightwing sect known as Colonia Dignidad. The guns and rocket launchers were buried at some 10 metres and while the authorities had searched for years, the robot found the buried weapons almost instantly. Then, in the case of missing businessman Jose Yuraszeck, Arturito was able to analyse the soil and identify the molecular composition of human bones, allowing investigators to dig straight to the body of the murder victim.

Supermassive Black Hole Confirmed

Sept. 21, 2005— A supermassive black hole with the tonnage of 140,000,000 suns has been found simmering at the center of the Andromeda galaxy, accompanied by a hornet’s nest of furious blue stars.

All of those blue stars, detected as just a single blue dot a few pixels wide by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), are the key to confirming, once and for all, the existence and mass of the black hole, astronomers said.

Careful analysis of the Hubble data revealed that the blue light is from hundreds of the fast-burning stars that are orbiting a relatively small and dark region at speeds that make sense only by the presence of a monster black hole.

“At this point the least extraordinary explanation of what we’re seeing is a supermassive black hole,” said astronomer John Kormendy of the University of Texas.

Kormendy and his colleagues Ralf Bender and Richard Green have reported their discovery in the Sept. 20 issue of Astrophysical Journal.

“It turns out to be bigger than we thought,” said Kormendy of the black hole’s extraordinary size.

The existence of the black hole at the center of Andromeda has been suspected for decades, he said. But there was also the possibility that the dark region seen by telescopes was just a stellar bone yard crowded with dim, burned-out star corpses.

That view has been changed because of data gathered by a now-defunct spectrograph on the HST, explained Kormendy. His team found that the blue light, when split into its composite colors (a spectrum), has the “bomb-proof” hallmark of stars, he said. And not just any stars: they are big, hot blue stars like Sirius, the brightest star in Earth’s night sky, he said.

The spectrum of what is thought to be a disk of some 400 blue stars also shows shifts that indicate the stars are orbiting the black hole. It’s the rate of the rotation of those stars about the black hole that helps the researchers to calculate the approximate mass of the black hole.

“The really special thing about what they’ve done is to use spectroscopy to measure the velocity of stars” located close to the center of Andromeda, said astrophysicist Scott Tremaine of Princeton University.

In all, there are about 35 other galaxies with suspected supermassive black holes at their center, said Kormendy. Only in two other galaxies have the black holes been considered proven: NGC 4258 (also known as M106) and our own galaxy, the Milky Way.

In fact, says Kormendy, it’s unlikely that the others will be confirmed, because they are so far away.

In contrast, Andromeda is the closest full-fledged galaxy to our own and its core is actually easier to see than the Milky Way’s, Tremaine said.

NASA’s satellite detects most distant star burst

LOS ANGELES, Sept.12 (Xinhuanet) — A gamma-ray burst from the edge of the visible universe has been spotted by NASA’s Swift observing satellite. Astronomers said on Monday it’s the most distant explosion ever.

This powerful burst, detected on September 4, marks the death of a massive star and the birth of a black hole. It comes from an era soon after stars and galaxies first formed, about 500 million to 1 billion years after the Big Bang.

The fact that the burst occurred at 13 billion light years away means what the Swift telescope spotted actually happened 13 billion years ago, while the Universe is thought to be 13.7 billion years old according to the Big Bang theory, the researchers explained.

They measure cosmic distances by redshift, the extent of light shifting toward the red, or lower energy, part of the electromagnetic spectrum during the light’s long journey across the Universe.

The greater the distance, the higher the redshift. The September 4 burst, named GRB 050904, has a redshift of 6.29, equal to a distance of about 13 billion light-years from the Earth. The previous most distant gamma-ray burst had a redshift of 4.5. The most distant quasar known is at a redshift of 6.4.

The Swift satellite detected the burst first and notified scientists of its location. Then scientists used the Southern Observatory for Astrophysical Research telescope in Chile to discover the burst afterglow, and nail down the distance. A Japanese team confirmed the distance and fine-tuned the redshift measurement to 6.29 later.

“We designed Swift to look for faint bursts coming from the edge of the Universe,” said Neil Gehrels, Swift principal investigator.

“Now we’ve got one and it’s fascinating. For the first time we can learn about individual stars from near the beginning of time. There are surely many more out there.”

This burst comes from a lone star, astronomers said while beingpuzzled how a single star could have generated so much energy as to be seen across the entire Universe. The team has not yet determined the nature of the exploded star.

This burst was also very long, lasting more than 200 seconds, whereas most bursts last only about 10 seconds. The detection of this burst confirms that massive stars mingled with the oldest quasars, and that even more distant star explosions can be studied through combined observations of Swift and the network of telescopes.

One of the best ways to study the earliest stars is watching for their explosions, mission scientists said. The Swift satellite can pinpoint the location of the explosions with its gamma ray detector, and telescopes can study the composition of the debris to understand where and when these stars formed and what they were made of.

“This is uncharted territory,” said Daniel Reichart at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, who led the distance measurement.

“This burst smashes the old distance record by 500 million light-years. We are finally starting to see the remnants of some of the oldest objects in the Universe.”
